What makes Grace Wildly Capable?

Grace is a wildly capable woman due to her unwavering resilience in the face of challenges, her multifaceted achievements as a veteran, scholar and advocate, and her dedication to empowering others and making a positive impact in the community. MEL WILLIS

What makes you feel proud?

If I gave all of the details of my story and my life, you would not believe me. I am a veteran, believer, wife, mom and doctoral student. For starters, I endured a turbulent childhood that would inadvertently lead me to writing poetry and playing basketball, both as means of self-expression. I put myself through college, joined the military and later became an advocate for children with disabilities after my daughter’s diagnosis of sickle cell disease. I am proud of not giving up on myself and my future. The path I am on now is not one I ever saw myself being on, but I did not give up and I never will.

What keeps you up at night?

The weight of the world and how it will impact our children keeps me up at night. Also how others will treat children like my daughter who have sickle cell or any disability or genetic condition.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

Growing up I lived with my grandparents during some influential years and my grandfather heavily influenced me to never give up. As life is now, my daughters influence me to have the heart of a child and to keep going no matter what, to smile with no limits and to be free.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

My biggest obstacle in life has been asking for help. That includes sending myself to boarding school because of my homelife, needing food to eat, putting myself through college and navigating having a child with a medical condition... I have needed help to make it through it all.
