Emily Jensen
When Emily couldn’t find the school experience she desired for her own kids, she took a bold, brave step and started one herself. Now, she provides the best learning environment she can for more than 100 local students.
What makes you feel proud?
Helping people around me shine bright. The reason I chose a lighthouse as the symbol for The Beacon School is because I believe with all my heart that each individual has a light (gifts and talents from God) that they can share with the world to make it a better place to live. I love helping others identify the light they have been gifted that can make a difference in the world.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
I hope I can continue to become a wife, mother and school owner who strikes a healthy balance between all of the things I juggle daily. It is always a struggle to strike the right balance between the many demands of life, but it is something I hope to get better at over time.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
My kids. The moment I became a mother was the moment my perspective on life shifted entirely. Up until that point I was very focused on me, myself and I and I was focused on collecting as many accomplishments as I could. As soon as my firstborn was placed in my arms at the age of 27, the desire for outside accomplishments diminished. My focus shifted to helping others shine bright, starting with my children. That is how Beacon began. It was born from a desire to provide my children with the most beautiful educational experience I could possibly dream up.
“I really believe every obstacle is an opportunity for growth, so, even though the last four years have stretched me past my limits, I have grown more than I could have ever imagined.”
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
Starting the school has been one of the toughest challenges I have faced in my life. I really believe every obstacle is an opportunity for growth, so, even though the last four years have stretched me past my limits, I have grown more than I could have ever imagined.
