Linda Vater

A self-taught gardener, Linda has built a business around sharing her knowledge of the garden. But dig deep and you see it’s less about gardening and more about building a community, curing loneliness and helping others learn a skill that enriches their lives.

What makes you feel proud?

The great number of people who tell us that our platforms make them feel less lonely, help them make it through difficult times, and most importantly, inspire them in their daily lives. I am a self taught gardener, so I try to be self deprecating and humble in sharing information. I am just like everyone else learning as we go along. Over the years, I think I have developed a certain kind of personal style in and out of the garden that other people seem to find compelling. I try to help others discover their own personal style in a way that is accessible and that need not rely on deep pockets, formal training, or grand circumstances.

What keeps you up at night?

Climate change, social dissonance and divisions and extreme weather events in my garden!

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

I think my immediate family and my family situation growing up had the most influence on me. I lost my Mother at a young age and come from a very large family. That had a big impact. I now have a couple of people close to me who help influence and shape me on an ongoing basis.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

I wish I were more brave. And I often feel that I get in my own way, whether it’s because of basic insecurities, unachievable perfectionism or sheer laziness!!

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

More disciplined, more patient! And more accepting of what is. I’d like to be more focused.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

This too shall pass. During times like these it’s important to remember there have always been times like these.
