What makes you feel proud?
I came to the United States on a tennis scholarship with the dreams of making it big and one-day meeting and playing against Serena Williams. That all came crashing down when I got injured. It took a lot of strength, determination and grit to start over and figure out where I will go and what I will do, and I am very proud of the work I am doing today and the path I am on. I hope to make people’s lives better and change some old worn out policy along the way. I am proud that I completed my master’s degree and look forward to the completion of my PhD.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
Being an immigrant and being a woman.
What keeps you up at night?
When can girls go to school without worrying about dying, being raped, getting married, being beaten, being shamed, being told they are less than men, being mentally, emotionally and physically abused and manipulated? When can we fix the wealth disparity? Am I doing enough? As a former international student, am I paying it back enough?
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Trust folks and they will trust you, lift people along with you, always remember who helped you get there and never forget why you started it all.
