Sunnie Jamerson

Although many may be impressed by Sunnie’s commitment to become sober and earn multiple degrees against all odds, what’s truly amazing is the way she’s committed her career to breaking the cycle of addiction for others.

What makes you feel proud?

Raising my daughter makes me feel proud. Parenting in recovery is the hardest thing I have had to do. She is such a great kid and is growing into a kind human. I could not ask for more from her.

What keeps you up at night?

Work! It is hard for me to leave work at work because I am so passionate about the work we do at Catalyst. I know from experience how hard it is to break the cycle of addiction. We walk this journey with them, so it is hard to leave it at work.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

There have been so many people who have influenced my life. But I would have to say the biggest influence in my life is my daughter. She is the reason I do everything. From working hard at work to advocating in the community. I get up every day trying to contribute to a better world for her.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

I find myself struggling with hypervigilance. I’m always on guard trying to keep my daughter from going down the path I did. I Constantly have to remind myself that I am doing okay and that she is okay.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Sometimes you have to embrace the suck.

“Parenting in recovery is the hardest thing I have had to do.”

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

I am a big believer in continuous growth. I hope I am different and better in every way. A better parent, sister, friend, partner, employee, etc. I am always looking for opportunities for growth.
