Kris Williams
Kris Wilson-Williams has worked with LGBTQ youth longer than anyone else in Oklahoma City. In addition to being a mother herself, Kris has invested endless hours in helping other youth, including starting the first LGBTQ residential inpatient for adolescents in the country. Here’s how she describes her typical day:
Each day can be so different, but it starts with prioritizing needs. This morning I'm watching a suicide prevention bill pass in committee, while I text a mom that lost her gay son to suicide last year and who also attending my youth group in the past. Mom and I are scheduled to talk to the author of the bill on Friday to see if she would consider naming the bill after the mom's son. I'll stop by my lgbtq unit and say hi to the kids and see that all their needs are met and if the staff need anything. And then my day will be peppered with time dedicated to developing a sex ed program that we were awarded; time in developing a PowerPoint with a 14 year old to present at the Odmhsas Children's Conference; and balancing various calls from educators, therapists, parents, organizations and whoever need resources, education, and connections.
