What makes you feel proud?
I teach design at UCO, and when I look back on the past few years, what makes me most proud is seeing my design students grow and flourish in their education and after. It feels very rewarding to know I played a small part in helping them launch their careers and I’m so proud of them. I especially enjoy facilitating my students’ first real-world client experiences in Inktank Studio, where we have the chance to greatly impact the community by mainly helping non-profits and small-businesses with little to no budgets to elevate their brands and launch campaigns. I’m also proud of myself for getting involved with the community since moving back to Oklahoma. As an ambivert, that hasn’t always been easy for me!
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
Things aren’t always easy, but I try to face any obstacles head on. After all, that’s when we grow the most and I always remind myself of that when things are hard or scary. I think the biggest obstacle in my life so far, which I’m still trying to overcome, is the struggle to set boundaries and take care of myself—my physical and mental health—over others’ wants and needs, especially when it comes to my job/career. I thrive the most when I’m busy, but I tend to forget about myself in the process.
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
I’m really passionate about everyday people understanding the importance of art and design and the impact it has on their lives. The average person doesn’t seem to understand the value of art and design and how it really does surround them anywhere and everywhere they are. So, I hope to continue to be an advocate for art and design by being an active artist/designer in this community, and supporting/ promoting others in these fields as well.
