Michelle Harrison
Michelle’s sphere of influence is small, literally. She works with elementary students and does so with such care and intentionality. Greeting each child by name every morning, she makes students feel seen and gives parents peace of mind.
What keeps you up at night?
Knowing some of the kids in our community don’t get the basics: support, safety, love and food. Knowing there are many families that need help and resources but we haven’t connected with them yet.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
My parents. I was taught to work hard, treat people like you want to be treated. They taught me to always keep my word and have integrity in all things.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
Myself. And the disconnection of parents, guardians, teachers and administrators in school systems. We can do much more together if we’re all included in the circle to help.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
I hope I am able to pick my battles, expecting that I can’t win them all.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My parents instilled so many, it’s hard to pick one. But if I had to pick one piece of advice, it would just be to treat others with kindness and respect.
“I hope I am able to pick my battles, expecting that I can’t win them all.”
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
More efficient way to connect resources to families. Many parents feel ashamed or judged in some way when they need help for their families. It can be a challenge to get information and resources to people who don’t admit their problems. In order for them to overcome the obstacle in front of them, they have to talk about it first.
