What makes you feel proud?

When a student does well on a test after learning how to take notes and study, I'm proud. When a staff member leaves my department to follow their dreams and use the skills they learned from me to succeed in that job, I'm proud. When the organization benefits from something I did, I'm proud.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

Learning to work as a team player, even when it's not fair. Sometimes that has meant navigating politics. Sometimes I've had to personally confront someone older than me or higher in the organization than me; other times, I've had to learn to keep my mouth shut. I've had to learn which battles are worth fighting, when to fight them and how to fight them in a way that doesn't lose social capital and allows for ongoing collaboration in the future.

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

I hope I have my doctorate! I hope to be a better and more diligent wife and mother, something I'm always striving for! I hope I'm closer to the Lord, always growing in my relationship with him.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Sometimes your best today doesn't have to look like your best ever. Your best today is the best you can do with the time and resources you have available today. As a working mother, I don't have time to work on three drafts of a paper. I don't have time to cook meals from scratch every day...and that's okay. I'll give today's best today and let that be enough.

“I've had to learn which battles are worth fighting, when to fight them and how to fight them in a way that doesn't lose social capital and allows for ongoing collaboration in the future.”

What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?

I'd like to help pregnant mothers have access to the resources they need to make their own success stories.
