Kate McCracken
She cares deeply about giving women autonomy over their health, so Kate spends her days caring for high risk obstetrician patients and her nights serving victims of sexual assault.
What makes you feel proud?
I’m general, when unheard voices are heard, when unseen people are seen and when uncared for people are cared for. Personally, when patients or my friends/family tell me the impact I’ve made on them.
What keeps you up at night?
Injustices. In every facet.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
It was my late Grandma, Jan, who we lost to breast cancer. She was soft and kind but a firecracker when she needed to be. She taught me to sing, encouraged my love for reading and told me I could do anything in this world. I still feel her presence and influence when I take care of patients and my family.
“I think being a young, strong, independent and opinionated woman is always an obstacle in general. You want to be taken seriously and you want a seat at the table. I’ve had to fight and am still fighting for that seat.”
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
I think being a young, strong, independent and opinionated woman is always an obstacle in general. You want to be taken seriously and you want a seat at the table. I’ve had to fight and am still fighting for that seat.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
I hope I’ve continued to learn and balance when to fight for something versus making everything my mission. I hope I’ve met more people who are unlike me and allow me to experience life from their points of view.
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
Women’s access to quality care.
