Camille Landry
On the outside, it looks like Camille runs a local bookstore. Dig deeper and you see she’s created a gathering place that’s a catalyst for community change.
What makes you feel proud?
I get a big charge from watching someone come into the store and find a book that intrigues them, makes their eyes sparkle. When we host an event that provides needed resources or informs or brings enjoyment to people, I know that our efforts are worthwhile.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
Children! Seeing the young people of our community strive to have good lives, get the things they need to thrive, and watching them learn, grow, struggle for justice and develop into tomorrow’s leaders—that’s what keeps me going.
“Being born a Black woman in America has presented many obstacles, but also has given me strength, hope, purpose and determination.”
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
Being born a Black woman in America has presented many obstacles, but also has given me strength, hope, purpose and determination.
What keeps you up at night?
Paperwork. It never ends! In all seriousness, trying to figure out how to put our dreams and aspirations into action, how to strike a balance between providing service and paying the bills & keeping our doors open—that’s the challenge.
