What makes you feel proud?
I am most proud of the reputation that my business has established in the community. We are best known for our inclusivity, customer service and support of all small businesses. The Black Scintilla may be classified as a retail business, however, we are actually in the business of caring for others. We care for our community by being size inclusive and offering affordable apparel in sizes XS-3XL... something which is not so common in the boutique industry. We also offer free hemming and other sewing alterations to ensure that when our customers step out our front door, they are not only looking but also feeling their best.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
My nieces and nephew. I strive to be the best aunt ever. And not just the aunt who lets them stand on my new white sofa or has the best craft projects planned for them (which of course I do) but the aunt who is kind and makes them feel seen and known. Spending time with them recenters me, wears me out and reminds me of what is important.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
There have been times when the biggest obstacle in my life was myself. Self doubt, overthinking, fear of failure or wondering if I am good enough. But I am constantly working on overcoming these obstacles and continue to challenge myself to overcome these fears and grow personally and professionally.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Caleb Arter, owner of Blue 7, many years ago taught me to share my knowledge and experience. By sharing these insights with fellow business owners, it not only builds healthy relationships, but also better communities in which all of our businesses can thrive. As they say, “A rising tide lifts all boats.”
