What makes you feel proud?

I am most proud of my two children. Despite everything I put them through during my active addiction they have turned out to be amazing young adults! I am also proud of how I have turned my life around. I went from someone who could not go two hours without putting a needle in my arm to someone who people look up to. I am proud of the team I work on and the relationships I have formed in my recovery! I have a passion for helping people. Now working with drug court participants, it gives me great joy to see the light come on for a person who has struggled with addiction like I did.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

My mother. She is my hero. Despite everything I put her through, she never gave up on me. When I needed her most, she dropped everything and gave me a hand up. She has more faith in God than anyone I have ever met; it’s unwavering. If I can become half the woman she is, I will be happy.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

My addiction. It took hold at a young age and kept me down for a very long time. For many years I didn’t think I was ever going to make it out alive.

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

I hope to have grown emotionally and spiritually. I hope to be more confident in myself and my abilities.

What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?

Mental health and substance abuse. Our system is broken and people are dying. Something needs to change.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Be where your feet are.” My sponsor tells me that when I am obsessing over things that have not even happened yet, which is frequently! It reminds me to stay present and focus on the here and now.
