Valerie J. McMurry

Although too modest to say it herself, Valerie's nominator said she is a doer with incredible vision who never takes “no” for an answer and uses every area of her life to shine a light on others.

What makes you feel proud?

Having a heart for God, love for others and knowing that I have made an impact to enhance someone's life. Moving out of my comfort zone into an oppressed neighborhood to bring about change. Taking children to church, providing nutritional food through partnerships, improving streets, providing furniture, gas vouchers and any assistance needed to bring home. Becoming a developer to build communities and homes and addressing root issues of poverty and injustice and creating generational wealth through homeownership.

What keeps you up at night?

Injustices of impoverished neighborhoods. How can I make a greater impact, especially in the lives of children?

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

Creating and maintaining a wellness culture, mind, body and spirit! It took years of non-stop initiatives determined to make an impact in the Northeast area which was deemed as one of the unhealthiest zip codes. Fifteen years later we are finally seeing the progress I desired.

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

I hope I have found a donated bus or van to take more children and families to church. I hope I’m providing more tools for families to have better and healthier lifestyles.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

My Mother told me I could accomplish anything if I kept my eyes on God and worked hard. If you dig a ditch, let it be the best ditch. Do whatever you do well with all your might!

“How can I make a greater impact, especially in the lives of children?”

What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?

The lack of homeownership, slum landlords and a poverty mindset. I’d like to reduce low income housing because families deserve better.
