Taylor Self

Taylor lives according to this driving principle: to whom much is given, much is required. It’s the maxim that’s guided her into being completely invested in the success of others in her community.

What makes you feel proud?

I'm proud to be an Oklahoman. This place, while sometimes frustrating, is also so special. That "special sauce."

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

My late Father. I try to imagine sometimes how he would have viewed our world in 2022 with all of its pain points. His motto in life was "saper vedere," or, "knowing how to see." Knowing how to see is not just important for knowing which direction to go, it also helps you see things for what they really are, or see hidden connections that gird our lives.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

I have a lot of feelings. I feel things deeply and often wear those feelings right on my sleeve. I am working hard on seeing this as a strength rather than a weakness.

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

I hope that I've continued to interrogate who I am, why I am and how best to be all that I am. I hope I'm exactly 365 days wiser and more experienced. I hope I've found new ways to love myself and others.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Never be afraid to be the person who brings a dozen doughnuts to the meeting. You're instantly everyone's favorite. Even the folks who bemoan the extra calories feel special.

“I feel things deeply and often wear those feelings right on my sleeve. I am working hard on seeing this as a strength rather than a weakness.”

What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?

The best (and worst) thing about problems is that they're all connected in multiple ways. I'd love to see an OKC that values neighbors from all walks of life—even those struggling with addiction, houselessness and mental illness. I'd also love to see an OKC that rejoices in our public school system and unites for the success of our public school students.
