Ronna Pernell

Ronna is living proof of what happens when a woman has patience and persistence in seeing a dream through to reality. She’s dedicated to helping others do the same.

What makes you feel proud?

To have a thought in my mind, sketched and placed on paper. My creation on a canvas or paper and finished art piece makes me proud.

What keeps you up at night?

As an artist sometimes you get a creative thought and you don't want to lose it. So sometimes I can lose track of time when my creative energy is flowing.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

My art teacher Judy Mcgee. She saw the potential of my art and believed in my work and challenged me.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

When I was a homeless, young mother trying to get back on my feet. It was a struggle but we made it. I grew up in a traditional family but when I was 17 I was pregnant and living place to place. During this time I was determined to graduate high school even though my family had lost faith in me. I had to grow up fast. I was so naive, but God was always watching over me.

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

Now that I am a full-time artist, I hope to continue to grow creatively and to help my fellow artists. I worked for Southwest Airlines for more than 25 years. And I always said that was just my job to invest in my retirement. I retired in 2020 to become a full time artist. Now I’m getting these unexpected opportunities and I’m so humbled and grateful.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

To all have the beginning with the ending in mind.

“I was so naive, but God was always watching over me.”

What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?

I’d like to see more opportunities for female artists, especially black female artists.
