Teara Lander
Teara is known as someone who “truly walks the talk” and that’s evident in her work in diversity and inclusion. And while she enjoys being acknowledged for her higher education and leadership consulting work, she does the hard work in hopes that her sons can have a brighter future.
What makes you feel proud?
Accomplishing a goal I set for myself, knowing that I am the manifestation of so many of my ancestor’s dreams. I feel proud when I see what type of partnership my husband and I have fostered and what life lessons we have imparted to our children. I feel proud when I see someone helping another person in need. I see it all around and daily.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
Probably pursuing a doctorate while pregnant and in the early stages of motherhood. Both processes are filled with unknowns, so the combination of the two was quite stressful. By the grace of God and with a supportive village, I survived, but it was a huge obstacle.
“I feel proud when I see someone helping another person in need. I see it all around and daily.”
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
Racial and gender inequities. 2020 really shed light on the very significant inequities within our community. I want to help educate people on said inequities and create policy that fixes them.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
I hope I’m happier, I am settled into my role as an assistant vice president, more mindful with my husband and kids. I hope I’m different in all the good ways.
