Sara Mercer

When Sara adopted three children in early 2020, she had no idea a month later she’d be homeschooling in the midst of a pandemic. Her hope everyday is that each person she encounters learns a little more about their worthiness to receive love—not based on their actions to earn love, but based on the truth that they are created in the image of God.

What makes you feel proud?

I love it when I see one of my kids make an unselfish decision when they think no one is watching. Sometimes, I call them out on it and brag on them in front of them, but other times I just go to my laundry room and do a little happy spin to celebrate.

What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?

I would love for everyone to understand the power of connection and how one healthy connection with a person can change everything.

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

I want to be braver than the year before and love a little more unselfishly.

“I would love for everyone to understand the power of connection and how one healthy connection with a person can change everything.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

My Grandpa used to say “What is, is best.” That simple phrase has stuck with me. My story is not one I would have written as a child, but with each heartache I could hear his voice (and my Dad’s saying it as well), and know that I could dive into the pain and grow from it. When we lost a pregnancy and my life was in danger. When we moved from a state that I loved dearly to a place where I knew no one except my husband’s family and went through culture shock. When our first adoption was delayed because a beautiful, strong woman realized she could parent after all. When a dear friend relapsed and I didn’t know if I would ever see her again. I could go on and on. “What is, is best.” It is the best time to love, the best time to grow, the best time to cry, and the best time to laugh.
