What makes you feel proud?
I feel proud of my family and all the obstacles that my husband and I have overcome from our struggles with my husband’s cancer, infertility, family loss and adoption. I feel proud that we have made it out stronger each time with God’s grace and mercy.
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
My passion is education for kids and I would love to be able to see every kid have the opportunity to learn at their pace and be challenged when they are ready but also work on basics if that’s necessary. From my background in teaching in the classroom to owning a learning center, I have gotten the opportunity to see so many students succeed with a little love and practice. I think when kids have the chance to learn at an earlier age and stay ahead of the curve, it gives them the confidence to accomplish tasks they wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. I also believe that every student, no matter their background, their expertise, their disabilities, etc. is able to learn and we just need to encourage them and try to give them the best tools we can to help them to get there.
What keeps you up at night?
Most of the time, there are not too many things that keep me up at night because I believe that God’s love and protection surround my friends and family. The one thing that does keep me up is not always feeling like I am being able to give 100% in all parts of my life because something is pulling me in one way or another. In these times, all I can do is pray and believe that this season will pass and will be better because of it.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
I was born with a cleft-lip and palate and had surgeries from a few days old all the way through high school. With this, many insecurities and fears would come into my mind about not being beautiful enough or someone not being able to love me because of my scars, etc. Obviously, that has not been the case for me as I have an amazing husband who loves me and tells me I am beautiful all the time. This is an insecurity that I fight daily and I hope that someday I will be able to instill in my daughter that what’s on the inside is what will attract the people around you, not just the way you look.
