Shanel Byron
What makes you feel proud?
I’m proud of the way people see me as a role model. I’m grateful that God has blessed me so that I could make a difference in other’s lives. My commitment to making a difference in my community and my choice of multiple career paths help people feel their best and showcase my passion for uplifting others. I work as an epidemiologist by day, working with data to help leaders make informed public health decisions for the health of Oklahomans. When I’m not doing that, I work as an esthetician. I exemplify a multifaceted approach to improving lives and that makes me the most proud!
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
My biggest influences are my loving parents who immigrated from Trinidad to create not only a better life for themselves but also for my sibling and me.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
There have been a few challenges over the past few years. I overcame the most challenging obstacle in my life so far nwhich was deciding to end my marriage. My second biggest obstacle that I overcame was working in public health during a global pandemic and also being in school at the same time.
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
Access to healthcare and dental care! My dream is to partner with local organizations and businesses to offer a day of free dental care for the uninsured, including college-aged students.
